Understanding Shortages in Roofing Materials

Shingle Roofing Material Issues

Manufacturers and suppliers of roofing materials were severely affected by pandemic-related shutdowns in 2020. Combining those two factors with last year’s record-breaking storms, we’re still experiencing U.S. roofing market conditions that are virtually unprecedented. Manufacturing shingle capacities in some areas are still not 100%, and shingle production shortfalls are expected to persist for most of 2021. Recently, a large building products distributor told roofing contractors to expect production shortages through the 3rd and 4th quarters of 2021. The decrease in supply levels has unfortunately also been accompanied by a steady increase in material prices. Price increases have already been observed, and they are expected to continue. Shortly, prices won’t fall back to where they were pre-COVID.

Metal Roofing Material Issues

Aside from the pandemic, the worldwide steel market has also been negatively impacted by metal shortages. Many major metal roofing suppliers can no longer purchase more than 60% of their historical orders. It is currently impossible for some suppliers to order any new steel! Suppliers cannot purchase the full amount of inventory necessary to meet customer demand because existing inventories are being sold quickly. Over the next few months, steel will become increasingly difficult to come by. In addition, steel prices are expected to rise throughout the summer and fall. The price increases are expected to continue at least through November, as many believe.

Other Roofing Material Issues

Metal roofing and asphalt shingles aren’t the only problem areas. Almost every commercially available roof material exhibits similar impacts. As a result of the decline in supplies, prices have also increased for slate, tiles, wood shakes, vinyl-based materials, copper, aluminum, rubber-based materials, and others.

Impacts on homeowners: Higher prices, limited product availability, and longer lead times

Due to a low supply of roofing materials and rising material costs, homeowners needing roofing services face some obvious negative impacts. The best advice we can give you is to contact your local roofer immediately if you feel it may be time to replace your roof. You have a higher chance of finding materials in stock if you decide to act quickly. Furthermore, if you book your roofing project now, you will be able to avoid the additional price increases that will come in the days and months to come.

Homeowners also have to contend with limited product & color options and longer lead times on top of price increases. Manufacturers, for example, focus on only creating products available in the most popular colors. Because of this, it will be harder for the foreseeable future to find less popular or special-order colors.

The timeliness of roof installation is also affected by shortages of materials. When it comes to getting your chosen roofing materials, you may have to wait a little longer than usual. It takes some manufacturers two months to fulfill certain orders, so there have been some delays of up to two months in some cases.
